Big fan of SpecOps, pairs really well with Silo by the same people and Fritz by Lectric Panda. They're not the kind of tools you'll need in every scenario but for the times that you do, they're great.

Ill give those a look!

great educational post!

perhaps you could also mention virtual ans (https://warmplace.ru/soft/ans) ? it's freeware, and it's meant to be a software recreation of the famous ans synth, but in practice it's an offline spectral editor akin to those others you mentioned

it's awesome, i really like it and use it a lot

ill give that a look too!

Beautiful masterclass, loved all the technical information!

I've always fallen into the dumb camp of "if it sounds good" but that's probably a minor side effect from art school. I wish my sonic arts professor had taken more an approach like this to educating the class instead of his John Cage anything goes methodology. He got us all playing with doepfer synth stacks and pro tools but never really got technical with the information. He was very hands off, easy A class. First homework assignment was to bring in "an object that makes noise" and I predicted everyone would just try to pass off whatever was in their pocket the next day. Sometimes you need an easy A class in your semester but this one was a little disappointing. At least the synth racks were awesome <3
